Lord Smith is currently Chair of UK Green Investment Bank and IMI, a Director of Standard Bank Group and a Member of the Financial Reporting Council.
In 2014, he was appointed by David Cameron to lead the Smith Commission and oversee the process to take forward the devolution commitments on further powers for the Scottish Parliament.
Lord Smith is Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde and has previously chaired the Organising Committee for Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Previously he held the posts of chairman of The Weir Group and SSE, and NED of Aegon, Standard Bank, 3i, MFI Furniture Group, Bank of Scotland, Stakis, Tip Europe and Network Rail.
He has also been a Governor of the BBC, a Member of the Board of Trustees of The British Council, a Member of the Financial Services Authority, and Chairman of the National Museums of Scotland.
Lord Smith is a chartered accountant by profession and was formerly President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.
He chaired the process which produced the ‘Smith Report’ on guidance for Audit Committees, chaired the ‘Smith Group’ advising the Scottish Government on young people not in education, employment or training, and in 2013, chaired the committee which produced the Code of Governance for Higher Education in Scotland.
Born and educated in Glasgow, Lord Smith was knighted in 1999, appointed to the House of Lords as an independent cross-bench peer in 2008, and appointed Knight of the Thistle in 2013.
